Writing Saves Lives was founded in February 2013 after Tara Shuman, completed her first surgery and chemotherapy treatment for triple positive breast cancer. Just 32 at the time, Tara realized that writing was helping to save her life in two distinct ways: first, writing was having a significant positive impact on her well-being. It was helping her through the most difficult moments in her battle with cancer, and also helping her relax on easier days. Through writing, Tara was able to better observe, navigate, and understand her own experiences and the experiences of other people in her life. Second, writing was allowing Tara to memorialize her life for her family and friends, and especially for her young children. Tara was saving her life onto paper - or at least, onto the pages of the blogosphere.
Writing Saves Lives was born out of these two core concepts. Now, we are a 501(c)(3) organization. We are aiming to build a community that values the power of writing as strongly as we do!
